Raised in English Boarding schools, Jeremy Warshaw was taught being a gentleman meant emphasizing manners, suppressing emotions and not speaking until spoken to. It didn’t take him long to realize this just wasn’t him. He loved public displays of emotion and all kinds of people.
In 1978 after obtaining a law degree (who hasn’t?), and a brief boring stint in sales, he ventured into the advertising industry to obtain more people interaction. For seven years in England and eight years in the United States, he held several management positions at Saatchi and TBWA.
In 1992, he still felt his career was stifled. The reason he left London and came to New York City was to be close to some of the most fascinating people in the world. But still working in advertising, he couldn’t observe them from behind his desk. Hence he founded The Observatory, a company specializing in producing highly creative films which reveal how people behave in their natural habitats: whether in a Wall Street trading room, a bar, the supermarket or their homes. He finally got the chance to do what he loved the most; people watch.
After directing over 150 of these films, he started to direct commercials concentrating in the field of real people. His reality based documentary style of filmmaking has made him a very busy commercial director. Jeremy has an uncanny ability to put people at ease and to capture the right performance from real people on film. Originally he was represented for commercials through the Maysles Film Company, a great place to start in reality based production. Having worked for a few others in the intervening years, he is really happy to run his own show.
Jeremy Warshaw holds a law degree LLB from London University, England. Throughout the Advertising Education foundation he has lectured at Williams College, University of Texas, and Lehigh University. He has also authored a chapter in AIDS prevention Through Education, A World View, published by Oxford University Press, describing the advertising and marketing strategies he developed for the New York City campaign for AIDS education.
Jeremy has won numerous awards including an Emmy and an international Monitor award for best Director for corporate communications. But his favorite award was best handwriting in his school class when was 8 years old. Really.
Jeremy Warshaw lives in New York with his wife and daughter. When people ask him where he lives, he enjoys telling them, in his English accent, that he lives in Brooklyn.
